Xemex Smart Connect

Supported devices: Xemex Smart Connect P1/A1 and Smart Connect TIC

The Xemex Smart Connect is a bridge, not a meter: it reads the utility meter through its customer port and republishes the values over Modbus TCP. Our EMS reads those values, so the utility meter at the grid connection can be used without a separate energy meter.

Supported devices

  • Smart Connect P1/A1: reads the P1 or A1 port of the utility meter (DSMR 4.2 or later in the Netherlands, EMUCS in Belgium)
  • Smart Connect TIC: reads the TIC port of an Enedis meter in France

Xemex Smart Connect support is available from EMS controller version 0.0.335.

This is a monitoring-only integration. The EMS reads measurements from the Smart Connect and cannot control anything through it.

EMS functionality

With the current integration, our EMS enables:

  • Monitoring of active, reactive and apparent power, voltage, current and power factor
  • Monitoring of total imported and exported energy
  • Use of the meter as a grid connection meter or as a submeter, like any other supported meter
  • Scaling of the values on a transformer metered connection

Additional functionality may be added over time as integration capabilities evolve.

Setup

  1. Connect the Smart Connect

Connect the Smart Connect to the customer port of the utility meter and to the same network as the Voltmasters Controller, and give it a fixed IP address.

Follow the Xemex manual for installing the Smart Connect on the meter and for its network settings.

  2. Add the meter in the platform

Add a device of type Energy meter, brand Xemex and model Smart Connect P1/A1 or Smart Connect TIC. Fill in the IP address and the port of the Smart Connect. The Slave ID is prefilled with 1: the Smart Connect ignores the unit ID and answers on any value.

  3. Set the transformer ratios

On a transformer metered connection the utility meter sits behind instrument transformers and reports secondary values. Fill in the two ratios so the EMS lifts the values to the primary side:

    • Current transformer ratio (TI), for example 10 for 50/5 A
    • Voltage transformer ratio (TP), for example 100 for 11000/110 V

Both are prefilled with 1, which is correct for a directly connected meter. They can also be changed later in the device settings.

Known limitations

  • One Modbus client at a time. The Smart Connect accepts a single Modbus TCP client. Make sure no other system polls it at the same time.
  • Firmware older than V5.1. Older firmware reports the energy counters in kWh instead of Wh, and the firmware version cannot be read over Modbus. On such a unit the imported and exported energy read a factor 1000 too low. Check the firmware version of the Smart Connect when you install it.
  • DSMR 4.2. A DSMR 4.2 meter sends no voltages, so voltage reads 0, and it refreshes its values every 10 seconds instead of every second.
  • Smart Connect TIC. TIC reports an exporting phase as 0 W while the total still goes negative. The EMS therefore only uses the total power of a TIC meter and shows no power per phase.
