Energy meters integration
Xemex Smart Connect: the smart meter as your grid meter
Xemex, headquartered in Schoten, Belgium, makes the Smart Connect: a bridge that reads the customer port of the smart meter and republishes the values over Modbus TCP. Voltmasters EMS reads those values, so you use the utility meter at the grid connection without adding a separate energy meter.
Supported devices
- Smart Connect P1/A1
- Smart Connect TIC
The Smart Connect P1/A1 for the P1 or A1 port (DSMR 4.2 or later in the Netherlands, EMUCS in Belgium) and the Smart Connect TIC for the TIC port of an Enedis meter in France. It is a monitoring-only integration: the EMS controls nothing through the Smart Connect. Supported from controller version 0.0.335.
What the EMS gets out of your Xemex installation
- Real-time measurement on the grid connection as the basis for every control action
- Submetering per installation section or consumer
- Accurate data for peak shaving and injection limiting
- Reporting and cost analysis in the platform
- Mix all brands in a single metering setup
Why installers use the Xemex Smart Connect
The smart meter already sits on the grid connection; with the Smart Connect it becomes the measuring point of the EMS. The Smart Connect P1/A1 reads the P1 or A1 port (EMUCS in Belgium, DSMR 4.2 or later in the Netherlands), the Smart Connect TIC reads the TIC port of an Enedis meter in France. The EMS takes active, reactive and apparent power, voltage, current, power factor and the energy counters from it, and uses the meter as a grid meter or as a submeter. On a transformer metered connection you fill in the ratios and the EMS lifts the values to the primary side.
The technical bit, in short
- Connection over Modbus TCP; the Smart Connect ignores the unit id and answers on any value
- Fixed IP address on the same network as the controller
- One Modbus TCP client at a time: make sure no other system polls it at the same time
- Current and voltage transformer ratios (TI and TP) for a transformer metered connection, for example 10 for 50/5 A
- Check the firmware: before V5.1 the energy counters are in kWh instead of Wh and read a factor 1000 too low
How it works
How your Xemex connects to the EMS
Voltmaster Controller in the cabinet
The industrial DIN-rail controller sits next to the installation and runs the optimisation locally, even without internet.
Connect over the local network
You connect the device following the step-by-step guide in our documentation. We assist with commissioning on your first project.
Configure and go live
The installation appears in the platform: dashboards, control and monitoring are active right away.

Questions about the Xemex integration
Do I still need an energy meter next to the Smart Connect?
Not for the grid connection. The Smart Connect is not a meter itself but a bridge to the utility meter, and the EMS uses that meter as a grid meter or as a submeter. If another system also needs the meter data, keep in mind that the Smart Connect accepts only one Modbus TCP client at a time.
Why does a TIC meter show no power per phase?
Because TIC reports an exporting phase as 0 W while the total still goes negative. For a Smart Connect TIC the EMS therefore only uses the total power. A DSMR 4.2 meter in the Netherlands, in turn, sends no voltages and refreshes every 10 seconds instead of every second.
Does this work together with hardware from another brand?
Yes, the EMS is brand-independent. A battery, PV inverter, EV chargers and meters from different manufacturers are controlled together as one optimised system.
How do I connect a Xemex Smart Connect to the EMS?
The Voltmaster Controller connects to the device over the local network. The step-by-step instructions are in our documentation, and as a certified partner we guide your first commissioning from start to finish.
