Our EMS supports the hybrid energy storage inverters from Solis (Ginlong).

The S6 energy storage inverters combine PV and battery in a single unit. The inverter talks to the battery over CAN and exposes both on one register map, so our EMS manages the inverter as a hybrid inverter with its battery management system attached.

Supported devices

  • S6-EH3P30K-H: 30 kW hybrid energy storage inverter
  • S6-EH3P40K-H: 40 kW hybrid energy storage inverter
  • S6-EH3P49K-H: 49 kW hybrid energy storage inverter
  • S6-EH3P50K-H: 50 kW hybrid energy storage inverter

The inverter is reached over Modbus TCP through a Solis datalogger (for example the S2-WL-ST), which acts as the gateway to the inverter's RS485 interface. The battery capacity is entered during device setup, it is not read from the inverter, so make sure it is configured correctly.

Configure the inverter for remote control before you add it: set it to self-use mode and allow charging from the grid. Without that, the inverter ignores the setpoints our EMS sends.

Our EMS uses the volatile remote control registers of the inverter and refreshes them continuously. The stored storage mode and time-of-use schedules are never overwritten, so the settings you configured on the inverter stay intact.

PV on the MPPT inputs

The solar field on the MPPT inputs of the inverter appears automatically as a separate PV device under the hybrid inverter, with its own production and yield, so you can read the solar side apart from the battery side.

This requires EMS controller version 0.0.328 or later. On an older controller the solar production is only part of the readings of the hybrid inverter itself.

Two things are worth knowing about this PV device:

  • Enter the PV capacity on the device. It is not read from the inverter, and without it the EMS cannot size the production; a warning is raised until it is filled in.
  • The PV cannot be curtailed. The remote dispatch version found in the field has no proportional PV power limit, so this PV device is monitored but not steered. If the control strategy asks for a limit on it, the EMS reports that the firmware cannot apply it rather than silently recording the limit as applied.

Curtailment of the installation as a whole is still possible: the EMS charges the battery with the surplus and, where a grid limit applies, keeps injection within it. Only the PV inverter's own output cannot be capped.

EMS functionality

With the current integration, our EMS enables:

  • Monitoring of battery status and performance
  • Monitoring of the solar production on the inverter's MPPT inputs, as a separate PV device
  • Smart charging and discharging control
  • Optimization of self-consumption
  • Peak shaving and load balancing

Additional functionality may be added over time as integration capabilities evolve.

Alarms specific to this inverter

Alarm Meaning
Inverter does not accept remote control The inverter is not in a mode that accepts the EMS setpoints. Check the remote control configuration above.
No PV capacity configured for the hybrid inverter Fill in the capacity on the PV device.
PV curtailment is not supported by this inverter firmware A PV limit was requested but the firmware has no register for it.
Aggregate battery power is unavailable, only one battery port is measured Older firmware without the total battery power register. On a dual-port model the reported battery power then understates the total.
PV and battery power mismatch The solar and battery readings do not add up, which usually points at a metering or configuration problem.
AC coupling is locked or suspended The inverter has taken its AC coupling out of service.
Generator failed to start or stop, generator voltage or phase abnormal For installations with a generator on the inverter.
Communication with a grid-tied inverter failed The hybrid lost a grid-tied inverter behind it.
Master and slave software versions are incompatible The inverter's own firmware versions do not match. Have them aligned.
