Volt AIO

The Volt AIO, the Voltmasters analog IO module: 4-20 mA inputs and outputs to follow a Fluvius telecontrol cabinet version 4 that steers with analog signals.

The Volt AIO reads the setpoints of the telecontrol cabinet as a current, sends them back as an echo and reads the Q mode. No PLC is needed between the cabinet and the EMS anymore.

When do you need a Volt AIO?

A telecontrol cabinet version 4 offers the customer two interfaces, and the customer uses one of them (Fluvius TAU341K01, section 2.3):

Interface Signals What you need
B1.2, IEC 60870-5-104 Setpoints and feedback over ethernet The controller’s RTU connection
B1.1, analog 4-20 mA and potential-free contacts on terminal block XGX101 A Volt AIO

If an existing cabinet works analog today, for example with a PLC from another party, it stays that way: the customer may not change anything in the Fluvius cabinet. The Volt AIO then takes the place of that PLC. A Netflex cabinet always works over IEC 60870-5-104 and does not need a Volt AIO.

At a glance

Feature Value
Channels 6 analog inputs, 2 analog outputs, 2 digital inputs and 2 digital outputs.
Analog signals 4-20 mA, with an error of at most 0.02 mA per channel.
On communication loss The outputs go to a preset safe value.

How the signals work

Fluvius sends the P and the Q setpoint as a current, and selects the Q mode with two contacts. The Volt AIO sends both setpoints back as an echo and reports the Q mode back with two contacts. How to wire this is in the commissioning of the telecontrol cabinet version 4.

Both setpoints are a percentage of the installed power Pinst:

Current Setpoint
4.000 mA -110 %
4.727 mA -100 %
12.000 mA 0 %
19.273 mA +100 %
20.000 mA +110 %
  • Fluvius sends in steps of 10 %, which is about 0.73 mA.
  • The echo has to send the same value back. Fluvius accepts a deviation of 0.1 mA per card. If the echo is further off, Fluvius considers the setpoint not received.
  • The installation has 3 minutes to reach a new setpoint.

What the EMS does with the setpoints and the Q mode is on Telecontrol cabinet version 4.

Configuring the module

Configure the Volt AIO before you connect it to the cabinet:

Setting Value Why
Jumpers AI0 and AI1 Current From the factory the inputs are set to voltage.
Jumpers AO0 and AO1 Current From the factory the outputs are set to voltage.
Range AI0 and AI1 4-20 mA The open-wire detection of the inputs works in this range.
Input measuring mode Normal The fast mode is less accurate: ±0.5 % instead of ±0.1 %.
Range AO0 and AO1 0-20 mA This lets the safe value be 0 mA. In the 4-20 mA range the lowest value would be 4 mA, which Fluvius reads as a valid echo of -110 %.
Communication watchdog On From the factory the watchdog is off. Without it, the outputs keep their last value when the link to the controller is lost.
Safe value AO0 and AO1 0 mA If the controller drops out, Fluvius sees a fault instead of an echo confirming a setpoint nobody executes anymore.
Safe value DO0 and DO1 Off Both feedbacks drop, which is not a valid Q mode.
