Supported devices: BESS behind a Smappee Genius Flex

Our EMS controls a battery energy storage system behind a Smappee Genius Flex over the local MQTT interface of the gateway.

The Genius Flex aggregates every storage container of the installation into one system. Our EMS therefore steers the installation as a whole and reads the aggregated measurements, whatever the number of containers behind the gateway, while the condition of each container stays visible for diagnostics.

Supported devices

  • BESS: the storage system managed by a Smappee Genius Flex, one device per installation

What the system reports

  • AC power of the storage system, total and per phase
  • Available charge power and available discharge power
  • State of charge, total capacity and usable stored energy
  • Operating mode, the party currently steering the system, and whether the system is correcting the setpoint itself
  • Per container: DC voltage and current, state of health and battery temperature

The system publishes new measurements about once per second.

EMS functionality

With the current integration, our EMS enables:

  • Charging and discharging on an active power setpoint
  • Optimization of self-consumption
  • Peak shaving and capacity management on the grid connection
  • Trading strategies such as imbalance and price-based charging and discharging
  • Monitoring of the state of charge, the available power and the condition of every container

Additional functionality may be added over time as integration capabilities evolve.

Switch off peak shaving in the Smappee environment

Is peak shaving configured on the Genius Flex, then the gateway keeps correcting the setpoint our EMS sends, and both systems steer the same battery at the same time. Our EMS reports that the setpoint is being corrected, but the result is a battery that follows neither strategy fully. Leave the peak shaving to our EMS, which does it on the grid meter of the project together with the PV and the charging stations.

Control returns to the gateway on its own

The Genius Flex takes back control about a minute after the last setpoint it received. Our EMS refreshes its setpoint continuously, so this is invisible in normal operation. Stops the controller or does the connection drop, then the installation resumes the behaviour configured in the Smappee environment by itself, without the battery staying latched on the last EMS setpoint.

The local interface can park the system and send power setpoints, but it cannot restore self-consumption or peak shaving. Whatever is configured in the Smappee environment is therefore the fallback after a handover.

No reactive power

The system exposes no reactive power measurement and accepts no reactive power setpoint over this interface, so reactive power control and power factor compensation are not available for a battery behind a Genius Flex.

Add a Smappee BESS to the EMS

Add the system through the device wizard:

  • Brand: Smappee
  • Model: BESS
  • Connection: over the installation network, on port 443, with the credentials of the Generic MQTT battery integration from the Smappee app.

The battery is created automatically as a child device of the storage system. Set its capacity and its minimum and maximum state of charge to the values of the installation.

Credentials per part of the interface

The credentials are scoped per part of the interface: the pair from the Generic MQTT battery integration opens the battery data only. Metering and charging stations behind the same gateway need the pair from the MQTT app. Add the pair that belongs to the device you are adding.
