Sunny Boy / Sunny Tripower
Supported devices: Sunny Tripower 3.0-10.0, Sunny Tripower TL-20, Sunny Tripower TL-30, CORE1, CORE2, Sunny Tripower 125, Sunny Tripower X and Sunny Boy
Our EMS connects directly to SMA Sunny Boy and Sunny Tripower inverters over Modbus TCP for production monitoring and active-power curtailment. Most models integrate through the generic SunSpec adapter; a few families have a dedicated SMA-native adapter.

Any SMA inverter that exposes the standardised SunSpec Modbus profile can be integrated through the generic SunSpec adapter, even if it is not listed by name above. See SunSpec (Generic). To read several inverters through a single connection, use the SMA Data Manager.
EMS functionality

Enable Modbus TCP
Open the inverter interface
- Connect your laptop to the same network as the inverter.
- Open a browser and enter the inverter’s IP address.
- Log in with Installer credentials.

Open device parameters
- Go to Device Parameters > Edit Parameters.

Enable the TCP server
- Expand External Communication → Modbus → TCP Server.
- Set Enabled = Yes and Port = 502.

Save the settings
- Click Save All.

Enable reactive power control
To allow the EMS to send reactive-power setpoints, the inverter's reactive power mode must be set to external control. In the inverter's web interface, go to:
Device parameters > System and device control > Inverter > Reactive power mode
Set both of the following parameters to Q, external setting (instead of Off):
- Reactive power mode in case of active power output
- Reactive power for zero active power

In the Dutch interface: Apparaatparameters > Installatie- en apparaatbesturing > Omvormer > Blindvermogenprocedure: set Procedure blindvermogen bij afgifte act. vermogen and Procedure blindvermogen bij nul act. vermogen both to Q, externe instelling.
Which adapter is used
Most SMA inverters integrate through the generic SunSpec adapter (sunspec.generic), which communicates over the standardised SunSpec Modbus register layout and covers production monitoring and control where the inverter exposes it. This is the default and the recommended starting point, see SunSpec (Generic).
A few families need or offer a dedicated adapter that talks to SMA's native Modbus register map instead (exposing SMA-specific values such as per-phase active power and DC bus voltage/current, plus SMA's own active- and reactive-power control registers):
- Sunny Tripower TL-20 series (legacy). The TL-20 models predate SMA's SunSpec support and are integrated through the dedicated "SMA Sunny Tripower TL-20" adapter. Selecting a TL-20 model uses this adapter automatically.
- Sunny Tripower CORE2 (STP 110-60). The CORE2 does not work with the generic SunSpec adapter and uses the dedicated "SMA Sunny Tripower CORE2" adapter. Selecting the CORE2 model uses this adapter automatically.
- Sunny Tripower 125 (STP 125-70). The model number looks like a CORE2, but this is an SMA design and not a rebranded unit: it refuses part of the SunSpec control registers. It uses the dedicated "SMA Modbus profile" adapter, which is selected automatically with the model. Set the inverter's Modbus Unit ID to 3.
- Sunny Tripower TL-30 series. The TL-30 models (STP 15000TL-30, 20000TL-30, 25000TL-30) default to SunSpec, but a dedicated "SMA Sunny Tripower TL-30" adapter is available as an opt-in override. It is not selected automatically: choose it per device when adding the device (or change the adapter afterwards). Left untouched, these models keep using SunSpec.
- Inverters without SunSpec support. Older Sunny Tripower units whose firmware does not expose SunSpec fall back to the dedicated "SMA Modbus profile" adapter.
Active-power curtailment (with any adapter) requires the inverter's Modbus write access and grid-management mode to be enabled in the SMA Installer settings, and the correct Modbus Unit ID to be configured. Without this, the EMS can read data but cannot send setpoints.
Active power control and fallback
Curtailment only arrives if the inverter's feed-in management mode points at the register the EMS writes, and a wrong mode fails silently. The inverter can also limit itself when it stops receiving setpoints. See Active power control and fallback.
