Device overview

The device list on a Voltmasters EMS project: online status, search and filters, restoring deleted devices, and what to watch per device type when adding one.

Adding, deleting, restoring and configuring devices requires the Installer role. The Customer role sees the list but cannot change anything.

Under Devices every device of the project is listed with its online status. The gear opens the settings of a device, the bin deletes it.

When a device is Offline, the controller can no longer reach it. The platform reports that as the incident Modbus connection unhealthy, see Incident management. When you delete the last device of a kind, for example the only battery, the matching dashboard disappears as well.

The device list

Next to the list of a single project there is an All devices overview with the devices of every project you have access to. That way you find a device without opening its project first. Both lists work the same way:

  • They are ordered by project, then device type, then name. The cross-project overview also shows the project column by default.
  • Which columns are visible can be chosen per list.

Filtering the list

Filters narrows the list. Choose the filters and click Apply.

  1. Add device: opens the wizard, see Adding a device.
  2. Search by name.
  3. Filters: opens the filter panel. The number next to it is the number of active filters.
  4. Clear filters: back to the full list.
  5. Status: active or deleted devices. See Deleted devices.
  6. Brand / model: a specific manufacturer or model.
  7. Type: battery system, PV inverter, energy meter, EV charger, and so on.
  8. Controllable: whether the EMS can steer the device or only reads it.
  9. Nominal power: a minimum and a maximum, to find the large or the small devices.
  10. Apply: applies the chosen filters.

Deleted devices and restoring one

Deleting a device does not erase its history. Set the Status filter to Deleted to see the deleted devices, with the date each was deleted.

A deleted device is put back with Restore device. The device comes back with the references that were removed with it, for example the meter designated as the main meter or the parent device of a sub-meter.

Restoring is not always possible, and the list says why:

The parent device no longer exists Restore the parent device first, then this one.
The references were not recorded For devices deleted before restoring existed, the references cannot come back. Add the device again through the wizard.

Adding a device

How to add a device with the wizard is described in Adding and verifying devices. The wizard fills in the Modbus slave ID with the value comparable devices usually use, and reads the MAC address of the device when it probes it. A device without an address of its own on the controller’s network is reported as such.

Type What to watch
PV inverter A Growatt inverter on Modbus TCP has a ShineMaster data logger: add it with the ShineMaster adapter. A Growatt on RS485 first needs an RS485-to-TCP converter, such as the EP E300.
Battery system Add the battery inverter (PCS) first, then the battery management system (BMS).
Energy meter Link a sub-meter to its parent device. For a calculated meter without hardware, choose Virtual as the manufacturer.
EV charger Configure the connectors after adding the charger.
