Why load balancing is essential
Charge points are added on top of a connection that was rarely designed for them. Without control you risk:
- A main breaker that trips at the busiest moment of the day
- Production processes disrupted by charging peaks
- Unreliable or painfully slow charging sessions for the fleet

Load balancing distributes power in real time, EV charge planning looks ahead and goes beyond a smart charger. Enter the departure time and the desired charge level for each vehicle, and the EMS schedules the charging sessions of the entire fleet throughout the day: taking into account the electricity price, the connection capacity and the battery. Whenever something changes, the system recalculates the plan on the spot.
- Optimised charging costs: charging shifts automatically to the cheapest hours of the day.
- More vehicles on the same connection: the plan spreads the sessions within the connection capacity, no grid reinforcement needed.
- Charged at departure: every vehicle reaches the desired charge level on time.
And the person in charge? They simply plan and follow the charging sessions in the Voltmasters App.

Frequently asked questions about load balancing
What does load balancing actually do?
The EMS continuously measures the power at the grid connection and distributes what is available across the chargers, the battery and the controllable loads. That keeps the installation within the limit of the connection, without anyone having to intervene manually.
What gets priority when power runs short?
The order is fixed and therefore predictable: respect the grid limit first, then serve the site consumption, then charge the EVs from the grid, next charge the EVs from the battery, and whatever is left goes into charging the battery.
Does load balancing work without internet?
Yes. The full logic runs locally on the Voltmaster Controller. During an internet outage the power distribution keeps working, even without a connection to the platform.
Which chargers are supported?
Among others ABB Terra AC, the Alpitronic HYC series, Mennekes Amtron, Etrel Inch, Iocharger and Siemens SiCharge D, in AC and DC. The full overview of supported brands is on the integrations page.
What is the difference between load balancing and EV charge planning?
Load balancing distributes power in real time, at the moment itself. EV charge planning looks ahead and schedules the charging sessions of the entire fleet throughout the day, based on the electricity price, the connection capacity and the departure time per vehicle. That planning becomes available soon.
