Energy meters integration
One Smappee Genius Flex: the grid meter and every submeter
The Genius Flex is the compact Smappee gateway that gathers the metering of a complete installation: the grid connection, the production and storage circuits and every submetered circuit. Voltmasters EMS reads those measuring points over the local MQTT interface, so one gateway delivers both the grid meter of the project and the submeters behind it.
Supported devices
- Genius Flex
The Smappee Genius Flex gateway, with one energy meter per measuring point: the grid connection, a production or storage circuit, or a submetered circuit. The EMS does not offer the production and storage circuits as extra meters: the PV and the battery are added as their own devices, and a meter on either would count that energy twice.
What the EMS gets out of your Smappee installation
- Real-time measurement on the grid connection as the basis for every control action
- Submetering per installation section or consumer
- Accurate data for peak shaving and injection limiting
- Reporting and cost analysis in the platform
- Mix all brands in a single metering setup
Why installers use the Smappee metering in Voltmasters
Is a Genius Flex already installed, then the EMS needs no extra grid meter. You add the gateway once as the grid meter; the EMS then asks it which circuits it measures and offers the submetered circuits, and any second grid connection, to create in one go. The names come from the Smappee configuration, so a circuit called 'Warehouse' there has the same name in the EMS. Peak shaving, capacity management and grid protection run on the grid connection, and per submetered circuit you follow consumption and do load balancing.
The technical bit, in short
- Connection over the local MQTT interface of the gateway, on port 443
- Credentials from the MQTT app in the Smappee Store of the Smappee app
- Wired network (LAN) with a fixed IP address on the same subnet as the controller
- New measurements every 5 seconds: total and per-phase active power, current per phase, voltage per phase on the grid connection and the energy counters
- No reactive power, apparent power or power factor: add an Acrel ADL400 or a Schneider PM5000 at that measuring point for those
How it works
How your Smappee connects to the EMS
Voltmaster Controller in the cabinet
The industrial DIN-rail controller sits next to the installation and runs the optimisation locally, even without internet.
Connect over the local network
You connect the device following the step-by-step guide in our documentation. We assist with commissioning on your first project.
Configure and go live
The installation appears in the platform: dashboards, control and monitoring are active right away.

Questions about the Smappee integration
How many meters do I get from one Genius Flex?
As many as there are measuring points. Each measuring point has a type (grid, production, storage or submeter) and an id, such as grid-1 or submeter-1, and becomes its own energy meter in the EMS. Adding or removing circuits in the Smappee environment can renumber them, so check the meters in the platform after such a change.
Are the energy counters still right after the gateway restarts?
The import and export counters of the gateway restart when the gateway itself restarts, so they are reference values rather than meter readings. The EMS keeps its own energy totals by integrating the measured power, and those simply carry on through a restart.
Does the system keep working when the internet drops?
Yes. The Voltmaster Controller runs the optimisation locally in the cabinet. If the connection drops, control, peak shaving and the safety limits simply stay active.
How do I connect a Smappee Genius Flex as a meter to the EMS?
The Voltmaster Controller connects to the device over the local network. The step-by-step instructions are in our documentation, and as a certified partner we guide your first commissioning from start to finish.
