EV chargers integration
Smappee Genius Flex under smart control
The Smappee Genius (Flex) is the gateway that brings the charging stations on a site together. Voltmasters EMS connects to it over Modbus TCP and controls every charge point individually, with a charging power that follows what is available at the grid connection.
Smappee
Supported devices
- Genius Flex
The Smappee Genius (Flex) gateway. You add one charge point per connector, each with the same IP address and its own slave ID. The EMS controls the charging power and pauses the session; starting and stopping stays with the driver and the Smappee environment.
What the EMS gets out of your Smappee installation
- Load balancing within the limit of the grid connection
- Charge at the cheapest moments, including negative prices
- Priorities per charge point, the fleet comes first
- Interplay with battery and PV for extra charging power
- Monitoring of every charging session
Why installers combine Smappee and Voltmasters
The Genius Flex serves each connector on its own Modbus address, so the EMS controls per charge point instead of per site. When a meter approaches its limit, the charging power is curtailed before any loads are shed. The same connector can also be read as a submeter, so the charging consumption stays separately traceable. The Voltmaster Controller runs that optimisation locally, also without internet.
The technical bit, in short
- Connection over Modbus TCP, port 502, one slave ID per connector
- Wired network with a fixed IP address on the same subnet as the controller
- Set the supply connection in the platform: 1-phase 230V or 3-phase 400V, because the Modbus interface does not report the topology of the installation
- Ask Smappee to set the register refresh rate to 2 seconds; the default is 15 seconds
How it works
How your Smappee connects to the EMS
Voltmaster Controller in the cabinet
The industrial DIN-rail controller sits next to the installation and runs the optimisation locally, even without internet.
Connect over the local network
You connect the device following the step-by-step guide in our documentation. We assist with commissioning on your first project.

Questions about the Smappee integration
Which Smappee devices does Voltmasters support?
The Genius (Flex) gateway, over Modbus TCP. Every charge point behind the gateway is controlled and tracked individually.
Can the EMS measure the charging consumption separately?
Yes. The same connector can also be added as an energy meter, with the power, the per-phase currents and the consumed energy of that charge point.
Does this work together with hardware from another brand?
Yes, the EMS is brand-independent. A battery, PV inverter, EV chargers and meters from different manufacturers are controlled together as one optimised system.
How do I connect a Smappee Genius Flex to the EMS?
The Voltmaster Controller connects to the device over the local network. The step-by-step instructions are in our documentation, and as a certified partner we guide your first commissioning from start to finish.
