SolarEdge SE5K to SE120K, truly controllable

SolarEdge builds inverters that work together with power optimizers on every panel, from small and medium commercial roofs to C&I installations with the modular Synergy inverters. Voltmasters EMS steers the three-phase range from SE5K to SE120K over Modbus TCP: curtailing when injection earns nothing, controlling reactive power and following production in real time.

What the EMS gets out of your SolarEdge installation

  • Automatic curtailment during negative prices
  • Injection limiting, up to zero injection on the grid connection
  • Align production with battery, EV chargers and site consumption
  • Yield monitoring with alerts on deviations
  • Ready for the connection requirements of the grid operator

Why installers combine SolarEdge and Voltmasters

A SolarEdge inverter advertises a SunSpec control model that does not accept a power limit, so curtailment does not work through the generic SunSpec route. The EMS therefore uses SolarEdge's own power control protocol: it limits the active power as a percentage of the inverter rating and controls reactive power through a dynamic cos phi. If advanced power control is off, the EMS switches it on itself. If the inverter still does not hold the limit, you get an incident and the EMS no longer counts on that inverter for curtailment.

The technical bit, in short

  • Connection over Modbus TCP, port 1502 by default, slave id 1
  • Fixed IP address on the same network as the controller
  • One Modbus TCP session per inverter: several inverters behind the same IP address share one connection, each with its own slave id
  • Advanced power control is needed for the limit; the EMS switches it on itself, which restarts production
  • A fault reported by the inverter is raised as an incident

How your SolarEdge connects to the EMS

Voltmaster Controller in the cabinet

The industrial DIN-rail controller sits next to the installation and runs the optimisation locally, even without internet.

Connect over the local network

You connect the device following the step-by-step guide in our documentation. We assist with commissioning on your first project.

The installation appears in the platform: dashboards, control and monitoring are active right away.

Questions about the SolarEdge integration

Why not simply use the SunSpec integration for SolarEdge?

Because the SunSpec control model of SolarEdge does not accept a power limit. The EMS therefore steers the inverters through SolarEdge's own power control protocol. Did you add a SolarEdge inverter earlier as a SunSpec Generic device, then switch it to brand SolarEdge and the matching model yourself: that is not converted automatically.

What happens to the limit when communication is lost?

The inverter has no fallback value on communication loss. The last written limit holds until the next write or until the inverter restarts, because a restart resets it to 100 %. After a restart, the EMS writes the limit again as long as it still commands one.

Does the inverter restart when the EMS asks for reactive power?

Once. The first time the EMS asks for reactive power, it switches the inverter to the mode that follows a dynamic cos phi. The inverter then restarts power production for about two minutes. It does not happen again on later setpoints.

How do I connect a SolarEdge inverter to the EMS?

The Voltmaster Controller connects to the device over the local network. The step-by-step instructions are in our documentation, and as a certified partner we guide your first commissioning from start to finish.
