# Project settings

> Every setting on a Voltmasters EMS project: grid protection, battery strategy, energy contracts, the EMS controller, the API, users and the audit trail.

The project settings govern how the EMS manages energy for a site: what the grid connection allows, how the battery is steered, which contract the prices are calculated against, and who has access. They are spread over a few pages in the project menu.

Start with [General settings](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/general-settings/), which walks through all of them in the order they appear.

- [General settings](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/general-settings/): project details, grid protection, battery strategy and contract optimisation.
- [Energy contracts](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/energy-contracts/) and [Energy price calculation](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/energy-price-calculation/): how the market becomes the prices the EMS plans against.
- [Consumption planning](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/consumption-planning/): telling the EMS when consumption will differ from the forecast.
- [EMS controller](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/ems-controller/): the controls and the network configuration of the controller on site.
- [DSO RTU settings](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/dso-rtu/) and [External control](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/external-control/): the grid operator and the trading party that may steer the installation.
- [Users](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/users/): who has access, and what the Client and Installer roles may do.
- [API](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/api/) and [Activity](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/activity/): reading the project from your own software, and the audit trail of every change.
