# Manual override

> A manual override in the Voltmasters EMS: fixing the power of a device yourself for a period, scheduling it in advance and stopping it early.

Source: https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/device-management/device-settings/manual-override/

A manual override fixes the power of a device for a period, for example to charge or discharge a battery.

> **Warning**
>
> During an override the algorithm does not control that device: it only follows the configured setpoint. Stay within the import and export limits of the connection. After the period the algorithm takes over again by itself.

1. **Open the Manual Override tab**

Open the device with the gear in the [device overview](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/device-management/device-overview/) and choose the **Manual Override** tab.
2. **Configure the override**

   Fill in the following fields:

   - **Controllable module**: select the module you want to control, for example charge or discharge power.
   - **Override value (kW)**: the power the device holds. For a battery, positive is charging and negative is discharging, as on the [algorithm dashboard](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/dashboards/pro-dashboard/algorithm-dashboard/): `+20` charges at 20 kW, `-20` discharges at 20 kW.
   - **Period**: the **from** and **till** moment. When **from** lies in the future, the override is scheduled: it starts and stops by itself.

Click **Create Override** to save and activate the setting.

   > **Note**
   >
   > Which modules you can override depends on the device. For battery systems (PCS) that support it, **reactive power** can be overridden in the same way as active power, within the reactive-power limits configured in the [project settings](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/voltmasters-platform/project-settings/general-settings/).
3. **Monitor the override**

   1. Under **Current Overrides** each override is listed with its date, module, type, value and period.
   2. Click **Stop** to end an override early.
   3. Earlier overrides are listed at the bottom under **Previous Overrides**.
