# Generators

> The generators the Voltmasters EMS reads and controls through their generator controller, for Microgrid: what the EMS does with a generator, and the controllers per brand.

The EMS reads and controls generator sets through their own generator controller. A generator is part of a [Microgrid](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/microgrid/): during a grid outage it takes over when the battery runs low, and it stops again once the battery is charged.

## How the EMS controls a generator

The controller talks to the generator controller, not to the engine itself. The generator controller starts the set, synchronises it and closes its breaker.

- The EMS decides when the generator runs and at what power, from the state of charge thresholds in the [microgrid settings](https://voltmasters.io/en/docs/microgrid/configuration/).
- The generator controller keeps doing what it does on its own: starting and stopping the engine, synchronising and protecting the set.
- Alarms of the generator controller appear as incidents on the generator device.
